What a lovely pioneer this is. Grows well in gravel and sun or other well-drained soils, tolerates sandy or heavy soils too. Very often blooms the first year from seed. Tap root makes a good tea to help reduce fever, esp. from measles. Individual flowers open from the base upwards in a whorl along the elongated cones. They have showy golden anthers, a lovely contrast to purple petals
