| Ox-Eye Sunflower is a great perennial flower from the prairie with dark green leaves and boat-loads of bright yellow, 2-inch blossoms from mid-summer to early fall. Grows in open meadows and woodland edges or openings up to 7,000 feet elevation. Will tolerate temperature extremes from blazing hot summers to frigid winters. Will persist in poor, clay soils as long as it is not in a low area that remains saturated. Like other sunflowers, attracts butterflies and songbirds. Use in informal cottage gardens, wildflower meadows, fence rows, and rock gardens. Does not produce rhizomes so is safe in formal settings if dead-headed before seed matures in the fall. |
